GraniteCrete is a combination of pre-consumer recycled aggregate, gypsum by-product, fine clays and colorant. The exact components and mixing ratios are proprietary technology and are protected by the company's trade secret policy and U.S. and International patent filings.
Here is a comparison chart indicating the competitive advantages and costs of GraniteCrete vs. other concrete and surface products. Prices are COGS calculated per square foot at 3" and do not include labor or materials (i.e. rebar or base-rock) as of April 28, 2006. From the chart you can see that GraniteCrete is 58¢ less than porous concrete – 33% less expensive!
HOW DOES GRANITECRETE COMPARE TO CONCRETE IN TERMS OF COST?
GraniteCrete costs approximately one third less than concrete and requires no expensive rental equipment or artificial strengtheners to install a great looking and long lasting path.
Yes. GraniteCrete can be specially poured for driveway usage. The reduction in porosity is minimal. GraniteCrete however, is not suggested for heavy roadway usage where increased vehicle speed can wear down GraniteCrete.
Not if installed correctly. However, it can crack, just not as much as concrete. Generally what causes this is incorrect installation of the sub-base. GraniteCrete can last for years without maintenance. In fact, GraniteCrete looks better with age and like concrete, gets stronger with maturity.
CAN I INSTALL GRANITECRETE IN AREAS WITH FREEZING WINTER CLIMATES?
No. GraniteCrete works best in moderate climates - where there is no concern with prolonged freezing temperatures.
HOW IS GRANITECRETE INSTALLED?
GraniteCrete is installed over a bed of gravel and contained with light header board. The product is then tamped down to the proper compaction to ensure long lasting strength. See our technical details page, starting with the "methods" section, for more detailed information on materials and process.
DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL TOOLS TO INSTALL GRANITECRETE?
No. The most sophisticated tool you may want to speed up your installation process is a Vibraplate to maximize compaction. These can be easily rented at local tool dealiers.
Yes. Even though GraniteCrete maintains its color for years under harsh erosion, like any other natural aggregate path, the local soils and dust matter around GraniteCrete tend to mix evenly with the top surface resulting in a natural color blending.Of course, GraniteCrete's color can be optimized by regular maintenance to keep the path free from natural soils and dust.
No. A simple pick-axe will serve to break GraniteCrete into removable clumps. For that reason, GraniteCrete is an ideal product for use over water or other service lines that may need future
attention.
